We're excited to announce that Sherpa is partnering with Expedia to embed real-time entry requirements and eVisa applications directly into the Expedia booking experience. When a traveler books an international trip on Expedia, they'll be able to see exactly which documents they need and apply for an eVisa where available, all accessible from Expedia.
Why Expedia is doing this
For travelers planning international trips, understanding passport and entry requirements can be confusing and time-consuming. While the EU Package Travel Directive (2015/2302) requires travel companies to provide this information to EU residents before purchase, most platforms meet the requirement by sending travelers to a government portal.
Expedia decided to make the process easier and more useful by integrating the information directly into the traveler journey and into the post-booking experience. Sherpa tracks more than 300 significant policy changes per year and is the fastest solution for updating travel requirements 92 percent of the time. The integration with Sherpa gives Expedia travelers the right information at the right moment, and the ability to act on it immediately.
Expedia's own research found that 77 percent of travelers are prepared to book multiple parts of a trip on a single platform, and 76 percent would return to add further components. This is because trust has already been established, and once the fun of choosing the destination is over, consolidating the practicalities of travel in one place becomes a selling point for customers. Handling the document side of the journey, rather than leaving it to chance, is how Expedia delivers both.
How the partnership works
When a traveler books an international trip on Expedia, Sherpa's tools surface the relevant entry requirements in real time, covering 220 destinations across 10 travel-requirement categories. For destinations where an eVisa or electronic travel authorization is available, travelers can apply directly through Sherpa, accessible from Expedia. The document check takes under three seconds.
Sherpa was selected as Expedia's partner because of its ability to do this reliably at scale. We maintain relationships with 350+ government bodies, handle more than 300 million API requests a month, and have informed over 2 billion journeys. That infrastructure is why our eVisa applications have a 99.1% approval rate.
"Expedia is one of the world's largest travel platforms, and they've made a clear decision to go further than compliance requires," said Max Tremaine, CEO of Sherpa. "The Package Travel Directive sets the minimum bar. What Expedia is building is a booking experience where travelers arrive prepared, because they had the right information at the right moment. We're proud to be making that happen."
